While I've owned shotguns during my youth for hunting, I've never owned a pistol ... although I have fired M1 rifle and .45 calibur pistols. I currently have a Firearms license application pending, awaiting final approval from my local police department, so that I can legallly purchase a pistol here in New Jersey.
