If you are scanning directly from a printed page, look in the scanner software (where you set resolution, etc) for a setting called 'descreening' and turn that on. It will get rid of the patterns you are getting.

You may also want to set the scanning resolution higher (at least 300 dpi or more) to make the picture bigger...
