While there are many less A/C collectors then there are NV collectors how many would spend that amount on a chip to begin with?
It would only be a purchase I would make as a must have chip to fill a hole in my collection. I don't view my hobby as a business but at those prices I would certainly be concerned that I would at least get my money back in hard times. You note I did not say investment. I'm not in this hobby to make a profit.
The nature of the economy itself not to mention "trend swings" has a lot to do with things also.
Look at the prices of Hard Rock chips a few years ago where people waited in line for hours and issues were 5000
Today issues are but 1500 or so and you find them on ebay minutes after issue at only slightly above face.
I also think that one of the things that has hurt the Atlantic City chip "market" is the amount of new collectors.
In the last 2 years ago aside from new roulettes, there have been virtually no new chips issued which has to be a factor for bringing new people into the hobby
I have to question where the number of 6 or 7 chips comes from. I would be willing to bet it's a lot more than that. I personally sold a stand on edge example of this chip to a dealer for a friend of mine not long ago.
The Playboy debacle certainly didn't help things but imho has little or nothing to do with this. It was simply a fluke.
BTW, speaking of price trends. There exist a set of Atlantis chips in a notched condition from $1 to $5000.
In the A/C price guide they were valued at (someone correct me if i'm wrong) in excess of $1500 for the set a few years back
It is speculated that there are no more than perhaps a dozen sets that exist. A few years ago, I was able to secure a set on ebay for under $300.
Since then the set has been devalued where A price no longer exists and a note appears in the price guide referring to my purchase. Well the question is that since there have been no sales of this item that I am aware of, how would 1 fluke sale effect the price. There have been no finds so if I bought a $1500 set for $300 how much is it worth?
The question is actually a rhetorical one as I'm just glad to have it in my collection.
Bottom line to me is, a chip is worth what you are willing to pay for it.
Buy it from a dealer who is in business, you will pay retail
Buy it on ebay, you compete against dealers who will not pay above wholesale (whatever that is) and you may or may not get a deal.
As they say, Caveat Emptor (let the buyer be aware) I think a lot of chip sales have to do with hype as mentioned in other posts. Mho is if you are in this for the money, find another hobby. Few people profit from this.
If you are in it for the hobby, sit back and enjoy it.
BTW I'm just a collector and far from one of the experts
