The airlines have become more proficient in booking seats lately. I don't think that what was a common practice of overbooking years ago is quite as prevalent as today.

Having said that, my grandson who came home on leave from his basic military training two weeks ago told me that the flight he was on from Georgia to Newark, NJ was offering bumps to volunteers who would give up seats.
