I had the same experience with my HP. They connected me to India, where the "help" was unable to understand my serial number and repeat it back to me. Then they explained I had a software problem. When I said are you sure, they insisted it could be fixed, but my warranty had expired. An extension cost me $99.
After paying the fee, I went through several more "helpers" who were never able to fix my problem. I managed to fix it my self after two trips to Radio Shack, but not all functionality was repaired. HP has refused to issue me a refund. HP SUCKS. SO....
I bought an Emachines. Cheap, efficient, and no problems.
