Very early in my railroad career I worked alot with an old head engineer. Bud Hawley, one of the best folks I ever met. At that time CNW hadn't put toilets on locomotives.
Bud used to drink Glenlivet and milk if you can imagine. Of course, if he imbibed enough ( a quart or two) it would cause him digestive distress resulting in diahrea.
We left Tracy Minnesota one morning about 3 AM. Bud had been out to Lake Shatek (sp) at the Valhalla Ballroom cutting the rug with the queens. He wasn't in the best of shape when we left but as the trip progressed he kept getting this pained look. Being a scheduled time freight, there were no stops.
Outside of Arlington SD where the tracks cross US Highway 83 he said, "Watch things I gotta go outside." He was a big 300 pound 6 1/2 ft tall man. He went out on the running board, pulled his pants down, hung his considerable bu** overboard and started shooting a stream. As we went over Highway 83 he was still shooting the stream. Being a Sunday morning with folks stopped at the crossing, my ever lasting memory was the first car stopped and I could see this little boy standing up in the front seat and pointing at the train and Bud. I could just imagine him saying, "Mommy, WHAT is that Man doing."...Maybe you had to have been there. LOL!!!
Stay warm...getting really ugly here...
