Consumer Reports 2008 Annual Auto Issue

After reading all the comments in some of the threads below I grabbed my last issue of Consumer reports and it raises some BIG questions.

If American Automakers make such great quality products, then how come they are rated so low in nearly EVERY catagory that CR reports in.

Here are just a few highlights.

Automaker Report Cards (Based on Reliability)

Honda - 78
Toyota - 75
Subaru - 72
BMW - 71
Nissan - 71
Volkswagen - 71
Mazda - 71
Mercedes-Benz - 67
Hyundi - 66
Volvo - 64
Mitsubishi - 63
Ford - 61
GM - 54
Suzuki - 49
Chrysler - 49

CR Top Picks for 2008 (Based on Road Tests, Reliability & Safety)
Small Sedan - Hyundai Elantra
Green Car - Toyota Prius
Fun to drive - Mazda MX-5
Upscale Sedan - Infinity G35
Small SUV - Toyota Rav4
Luxury Sedan - Lexus LS 460
Minivan - Toyota Sienna
Midsize SUV - Hyundai Santa Fe
Piuckup Truck - Chevy Silverado 1500

Again and again in every aspect from Fuel Economy, Depreciation, Owner Costs, Safety, Maintenance and others catagories, the foreign cars completely outshine most American cars.

Is this just a fluke? I keep hearing what a great product GM puts out.
