I wouldnt guess power supply. Rebooting maybe with power fluctuations, not freezing. Its memory or software. You might be pegging the processor with a rouge application -- that is pretty common in the XP world.
But as a second point you can get a USB to Serial adapter or USB to parallel adapter pretty inexpensively to get the label printer working on the laptop.
