I live...
38 miles Southeast of Tucson about 45 miles north of the Mexico border and I have to tell you it has gotten pretty bad here lately. It used to be fun to go across the border into Mexico at the Nogales Port of Entry to pick up cheap booze, cigarettes, and maybe pick out a nice fat Cubano Cigar. The last time I was down to Nogales, AZ on business I stopped for gas and I had to ask several people before I could find one that spoke any english at all. It is no longer considered SAFE to cross the border into Mexico because of a war that is going on between the drug cartelles and the Federalis. The local TV and newspapers say DO NOT GO AT ALL! It has become a fairly common thing to have our Border Control agents shot at from across the border, especially if they have stopped a shipment of drugs from coming across. It is not uncommon to see a Border Patrol Agent on an I-10 overpass with binoculars and every day on my way to work in Tucson they have someone pulled over and are loading them into the paddy wagon. I live about half way between the San Pedro River valley and Cienega Creek, both are considered major pathways for illegals to travel north. It is not uncommon to see them walking down the road exausted from the major walk, especially when it is a full moon. Just life out in the Arizona desert.
