NCR, BankNote of the Day.....(A Favorite)

Today's Banknote comes from the country of Burma now known as Myanmar. This is among one of my favorite series because of the Lion. Each of the denominations in the series features the "King Lion" or Chinthe.

The story of the Chinthe goes something like this: A princess had a son through her marriage to a lion, but later abandoned the lion who then became enraged and set out on a road of terror throughout the lands. The son then went out to slay this terrorizing lion. The son came back home to his mother stating he slew the lion, and then found out that he killed his own father. The son later constructed a statue of the lion as a guardian of a temple to atone for his sin. And now you know the story of these creatures!

This is a 1991 issue of a 200 Kyat printed by Security Printing Works. 1 Kyat = 100 Pya. Kyat (pronounced as chat) literally means "round" and "flat". Kyat has been used in the 19th century as unit of mass, approximately 16.33 grams.
(Front) Gray, blue and purple on multicolor underprint. Chinthe at right. (Back) Elephant with a man riding on it pulling a log. Book Value $6.00 ENJOY!!

Languages: Burmese
Religions: Buddhist
