Blackberry has a huge amount of free applications. The main difference being there is no walled garden -- developers are free to create the application and supply them to you directly for import onto your phone. Apple took a different track -- to provide the webstore with the applications. Its a good deal for them, it allows them a revenue share (30%) on paid applications and a way to check for malicious apps before they get out into the wild.
