On a budget you may want to look at a Panasonic Lumix FZ8 - they may even have a newer model out now, has some draw backs, but I have been taking some amazing pictures. 12x optical zoom/ 18x digital zoom / shoots in the raw like most DLSR's. Manual Settings are easy to work with. Below is a picture I took last week.
