To tell you the truth here is an example: see this A, yes I see it as simply "three sticks" nothing else, one stick on each side and one stick across it. I learned it right in arithmetic that "2 sticks and 1 stick" equals 3 sticks.
Way back when I was teaching economics in Richard Stockton College, Pomona NJ I shared with a Professor in English a faculty office, he would now and then cross over to my cubicle to show me how poorly the students where in English 101 - could barely construct a sentence.
