As you know the Elks have a black ball - or had it at my time. To my knowledge no one had ever been black balled but a particularly obnoxious lawyer* insisted to a friend that he be put forward for memberhip. When the vote was taken, there was not one but nearly all black balls in the container.

* "obnoxious lawyer" is not redundant. Several of us are fine people. vbg
