AS A MATTER OF FACT, ARCHIE
during the war there were a number of illegal clubs in the S. Dak. cities that had airforce or army bases (we didn't have a naval base since the battleships couldn't make it past New Orleans) and private clubs like the Elks, Moose, etc had open gambling...we had to entertain the boys, didn't we. But as soon as the war was over, sheriffs and high way patrol struck and closed them. One of my friends had a joint on U.S. 16 west of Sioux Falls...when the war ended so did his trade but he made enough that he was able to buy land around the club and build a very posh country club. Syracuse had its share of illegal joints but I have found only the SYR chips from WWII. However, when I left S.Dak. in '65 the local Elks still ran L.V. nights with open gambling. Deadwood's Elks would open up for the Days of 76 and for other holidays. They had 3 slots going.
