Of course they have tried. Richard Reed is the reason I have to take my shoes off every time I go through airport security. The plans terrorists made to blow up planes while in flight from Europe (mainly England) to the USA using liquid mixable explosives were thwarted through intelligence gathering, and is the reason no containers holding liquids in a quantity larger than 3 ounces (placed into a baggy, removed from carry on luggage for screening) can go through airport security. I'm sure there are many other examples of thwarted terrorist attacks by individuals based on intelligence gathering, but, you and me won't hear about them. Why? Because broadcasting to this country's enemies what didn't work would only help those enemies.
