Regardless of how you store them, you MUST make sure to remove them from the little plastic dice storage boxes...or at least get the foam rubber out of the box. In time the foam will dry out and deteriorate, and have a chemical reaction with the dice that will leave an imprint of the foam on the dice.
Also, smell your dice (especially the old ones). If they smell like vinegar, they go into quarentine...they're starting to deteriorate and will speed the deterioration of dice around them.
Look closely at your dice. If the sides are caving in ('imploding') or the spots aren't flush, quarentine them...they're starting to go.
If you have dice that are starting to crystallize, but pass the other tests, you can give them a coat of clear nail polish. It will help keep them from crumbling. (Don't bother trying it with 'imploding' dice...I tried it, just to see, and all I got was sticky, stinky dice but they were doomed anyway)
Hopefully one of the dice experts will be along with more ideas, but this is a start anyway!
Oh! If you do decide to store them in display boxes, like ours, you should go through once or twice a year to give them the 'sniff' test.
