Put a piece of white paper over your chip

That's by far the easiest. The background is not transparent, but is a solid white color.

Photoshop does have facility to make the background transparent, but unless you are layering different scans, you probably don't need to go to the trouble.

Another way if you don't use the white paper is to make a round marquee tool box the same size as your chip. Use that to enclose your chip, go to edit and select Inverse, then select Cut. Everything outside the round marquee will be blanked. Some other graphics programs have a similar facility as Photoshop.
