Charles "Pop" Squires,
"The Father of Las Vegas"
Read his story here: http://www.1st100.com/part1/squires.html

The Hotel Elwell was open from 1951-1965, at 200 S. 1st Street in Las Vegas. Now the site of the Golden Nugget Parking Ramp.

The Carver House was open from 1961-1965 at 400 W. Jackson St. in Las Vegas. The casino formally opened on July 1, 1961, with 32 slot machines, two craps tables, four '21' tables and a keno booth. Rates for the 88 rooms were as low as $8.00, with special rates available to social, fraternal and professional groups. Principal owners were Paul Woodward, George Smith, Jr., and Abe Cohen.
We found Jackson Street a few years ago, I think it's now the site of a vacant lot.

See the two Nevada Clubs, on Fremont Street? There's one on each side of the Fortune Club. The one on the right used to be the Western Union building, the Nevada Club purchased it for $300,000, in 1957. The two Nevada Clubs and the Fortune Club were all under the same management.

Later in 1957, the three buildings were combined under a 75-foot marquee and operated under the Nevada Club name.

Hawthorne, 1954. The Hawthorne Club, Joe's Tavern and the Nevada Club are visible on the left.

Elko, 1954. Shorty's Club and the 449er Club are visible on the right, Stockmen's Hotel is across the tracks.
