I only recommend to my patients what I would use consider using myself: Either Resmed (my first choice) or respironics.
As for HME (Home Medical Equipment) companies, it all depends. Many try to sell you whatever gives them the highest profit margin, which is usually the cheapest of the units. Insurance pays a flat rate for the equipment. They don't care what you get....the best or the worst.
For those without insurance, consider buying on eBAy. There's usually quite a few.
If it were me, I would only consider one unit to buy for each category:
for a BiLevel machine: VPAP Auto 25 (by Resmed)
for a CPAP machine: S8 (by Resmed)
Masks are a different story as different people find different styles comfortable. Comfort is the most important factor. Personally, I'd have to say by far, the vast majoirty of my patients prefer Resmed mask products, but respironics also mask some nice units. I've found more people like the nasal pillows style then the nasal mask or the full face mask, but again, it's all personal preference. MOST important....is that the mask is properly fitted. You need the right size. That isn;t always the case. I've seen many a time where the HME has given the wrong mask size, or even the sleep center themselves using the wrong size.
I have no vested interest in my particular recommendations, they are completely from experience. How much experience you might ask? I've been in the field of Sleep Medicine since 1982.
