I have been sleeping with a CPAP since 2000, and I love it. I get to sleep much much faster, get much better sleep and feel much better. It took me only 3 days to adjust to, but I know I was lucky that way. As for sound, if the masks fits correctly, and has been cleaned properly, the sound should not be very loud. In fact, it creates a soft white noise that helps my wife get to sleep. The loud noise is air escaping from the mask, not the escape area. Or, you need a new CPAP (the newer models are softer). I have been in the same room with friends and/or in-laws during Vegas trips, but I have never had anyone else complain about the noise, either. And believe me, they would complain if it was a problem.
