what I consider 'fair use' and what is copyright violation. But the one rule of thumb I use is whether it is a SUBSTANTIAL part of the document. I see no difference between transcribing 6 pages of TCR or Xeroxing 6 pages of TCR. To say that it is theft to use ANY information from a published book, without purchasing the book, is unreasonable and does not hold up under law.

Today I received an e-mail from the Nevada Historical Society and Museum thanking me for my purchase of the rights to publish on my web site (future) 7 photographs from their collection. The price was $105. I've also spent many dollars for photographs from the UNLV Special Collection. I hope you can see from this I am not adverse to paying royalties. But, I do not consider Xeroxing 6 pages of a 400 page book, for my own personal use, to be a violation of copyright. Don't ask me how many pages of a 400 page book constitutes a violation. I can't tell you. Certainly 100, maybe 50, perhaps even 25..... but certainly not 6.

I hope TCR comes out in a volume less than $50 for the information I need. Then I'll buy it.
