When a tire dealer in Detroit started offering it, a local newspaper report said it wasn't worth the extra expense. Nitrogen does not evaporate as quickly as air, but the newspaper concluded that if you keep your air-filled tires properly inflated, you will get the mileage benefit that nitrogen offers without the added expense.

I don't know if those conclusions are different with higher gas prices now.
