Getting extra cards is not that easy everywhere. One of the cruises I went on they were very stingy. So, each evening (after dinner) I'd go to the Pursers desk and ask for a new card because I lost mine or my wife had it. They would print me card and I would put it away so as not to use it and get is scratched up. I would then use my old card to open the room, but it would fail. So, I would then pull out the new one and it too would fail. I then had to call the Pursers desk for assistance and they have me come back, re-program the card and then it would work. I did the same thing the next night and the same thing happened: I could not get into the room and each time it kept putting more use on the newly issued card.
After doing this at least 4 times, it was figured out that when I was issued a new card, the software of the system was set to disable the old card. BUT, when the old card is used on the door, the software tells the door to not work and NOT allow another key to work, i.e., the replace key. All of this programming is to keep a lost key from being used and if re-introduced to the door, it causes a lock-out that is an indication that a lost key was being used. Unfortunately, this feature was not known to the Purser or the technician until they communicated with their homebase trying to fix the problem with this irate passenger who consistently could not get his key to work!
Oh well, I ened up with several Royal Caribbean keys this way!
