About 7:30 p.m. flames could be seen erupting from the roof of the Alystra Casino, located near Boulder Highway’s intersection with West Sunset Road.
“It looks like the building is engulfed,” said Tim Thiele, a Sun employee who was watching from nearby.
Thiele and others said they first spotted a column of thick black smoke coming from the casino shortly before 7:30 p.m.
At least four fire tanker trucks were on the scene trying to fight the blaze, Thiele said.
Police were controlling traffic along Sunset Road, he said.
The casino, at 333 West Sunset Road, opened in 1995 and closed in 1998 for renovations. It never reopened.
