Former Club President Mike Skelton's post on Convention logistics was made back in 2003. We're now into 2008 and nobody to date has presented an alternative convention proposal needed as Mike outlined in the past five years that I'm aware of. Everybody wants a miracle to happen and move the convention to their back yard ... as long as someone else does all the work. It is my personal opinion that the far majority of club members like the convention to be held right where it is ... in exciting Las Vegas. Why mess with success? Folks complain about the room rate at Riviera, and support a move to Atlantic City where a room will cost at least $100 more a night ... IF the club could get an A.C. casino to agree set aside a block of hotel rooms on a weekend at all in A.C. ... much less suitable convention space. Most New Jerseyans in all probability wouldn't stay at an A.C. hotel if the rooms were available ... preferring to drive into town each day and save the $200 per night hotel bill for chip purchases.
Here's a challenge I'm throwing out to those who are unhappy with where the club has held the last 15 successful conventions.
1. I urge YOU to do the legwork and come up with an alternative convention site that meets even 2/3rds the requirements that former Club President and convention chairman Mike Skelton has outlined and present your data to the elected BOD.
2. For those who are looking to grow the club from it's current level of around 2900 members ... I ask this question; "when was the last time you signed up a new club member ... or even provided a membership application to a prospective new club member?"
Oh, wait ... now I remember the answer. "Let somebody else do it."
Well, I've got news for you. There IS somebody else willing to do the work. There are currently over 100+ volunteers each year who are willing to pitch in and help out at our Vegas conventions. So be thankful for what you've got ... because you may get what some folks are asking for."
