If you're using Windows, if you double-click on the image file and it opens in the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, you can right-click on the image and choose the "resize images" option. There aren't many choices, but some should be smaller than what you're getting straight out of the scanner. I've used Paint Shop Pro for years which allows precise resizing of an image, but when I'm not at home, using Windows Picture Viewer to resize items works in a pinch.
