The speech was in 1974 during a campaign debate, not on the Senate floor, according to Snopes. Of course, given the decorum of the the Senate, such a speech would unlikely be given in the Senate itself. The last three paragraphs were not part of the speech. Nonetheless, it is a stinging rebuke to those who would claim - as Metzenbaum did at the close of the VietNam conflict - that those in the military had never held a "real" job.
