At one time, the earlier you bought your tickets, the better the price. Not any more. I've found that 3 weeks seems to be the best. This is always the case for flights to the Islands, and most of the time throughout the USA as well. I've also found that prices are cheaper starting later in the evening on Tuesday for some airlines, and Wednesday evening for others. Not sure why, but it's always the case.
I also check on leaving a few days before as well as after. The particular days can make a big difference, assuming you have that luxury. Also if you are staying over a Saturday night.
A bit of information for those that don't travel much.....some of the airlines have stripped down and are charging for checked luggage. for example, spirit airlines now charges 10.00 for each checked bag for each direction. So if you and your wife are traveling with two checked bags each, you will pay an additional 80.00. They collect it right there at the airport, and they don;t take visa for it. If that weren't enough, they don;t give you free beverages anymore either. They will nickle and dime you to death now.
Other carriers are also charging for various things, some 20.00 for a 2nd checked bag. Some are lowering the weight limit and charging you for "excess".
So, beware of Spirit, who is the worst. Don;t get suckered into saving 10.00 on the flight price only to find out you pay 20.00 for checking one bag for your trip.
