I am at the Reno airport picking up my family -- Lake Tahoe bound. No mysteries there, so this will be my last post. My trip to the small towns between Elko and Reno along the I-80 west corridor was pretty interesting.
Winnemucca: Not as bad a town as I was led to believe, but still glad I extended in Elko rather then spending a night in Winnemucca.
-- Red Lion Casino -- nice place but only game other than slots was evening BJ
-- Sundance only slots
-- Parkers Model T (used to be Keith's Model T years ago) has slots and 2 BJ tables
-- Winners has slots and 5 or so poker tables they use to hold HE tourneys Wed-Sat eves, then cash games after.
Battle Mountain: Note - Several years ago a humor writer Gene Weingarten had a contest for the town that represented 'the armpit of the US'. Battle Mountain won. Not that bad, but not much going on.
-- Nevada Club has slots and 1 BJ table they open up evenings
-- Owl Club and the Colt casinos are slots only
Lovelock:
-- Sturgeons had slots and evening BJ Fri-Sun
Fallon: This was the surprise. After a 30M drive south off of 80 through desolation, the sizable and vibrant town of Fallon appeared. Nice old downtown with some decent restaurants and shops.
-- Nugget has slots and evening poker, no BJ and craps
-- Stockmans has slots and BJ
-- Bonanza and Depot have slots only
Took the road into Ferney but didnt see any casinos (blew through so could have missed them if they were off the main drag and not well advertized).
Reno: no mysteries here either, but wanted all to know about the nifty bike/walking trail that parallels the Truckee river. Extends about 7 miles east through Sparks and a mile or so west from downtown. Scenery erratic, with some warehouses and RV parks, but the river and mountains are nice.
Thats all for my reporting. Mark Russell, on assignment, over and out. Back to you, Jane.
