After hitting the malls upon our arrival in Vegas last week (Nascar races), we made a slight detour to the GI while headed downtown.
Yes, the parking structure (3 or 4 story) was a dump and slightly scary even during the day (very dark and talk about tight parking!). It is slots only (older models and some VP) with no TITO, tokens or chips (never had table games from what we were told). If you win any money, the machines spit out quarters.
We were pleasantly surprised though, nicely painted white walls, clean floor - it actually smelled clean in the casino. There was even a bubbling fountain, live plants, Spanish style mission benches, and shiny clean Spanish tile in the hotel lobby....actually quite nice.
There were only locals in the casino. At the back of the casino was a small bar area (6 or 8 bar stools) with 3 or 4 locals shooting the breeze with the bartender (older gal). The place was quiet and relaxed. Since there were no TITOS, $1 Tokens or even a players' club (no slot cards), I asked the bartender for a book of matches...generic white book of matches with no logo.
So I have NOTHING with the GI logo on it!!
I don't know what the hotel rooms looked like, but the casino looked like a nice walkable access for the locals that may live around the convention center and want a more relaxed atmosphere...sorry to see it go for them.
