You mentioned 'a few thousand scans" and it made me think of all the work over time I have invested in scanning, cropping and naming scans over the years. I have had quality scanns at THAT TIME in technology (when I did the scan & some were with handscanners remember those?) and I wish I could improve those earlier scans to today's quality. I have well over 10,000 scans on my website alone so the undertaking would be overwhelming and unrealistic. Are there ways to do that with software?
