It depends on what type of battery it is. FWIW, I've never had to replace a laptop battery, and I'm on my 5th laptop, averaging at least three years on each machine. I have had to buy new computers to keep up with processing speeds and software requirements.
"1- Should I keep the computer plugged in while in use?"
Lithium batteries will not be harmed by continuous charging.
"2- Should the charge be kept at 100% or close to it if possible?"
Yes for Lithium, no for NiCads
"3- Should I run the computer on it's battery only until it runs all the down and then recharge it?"
Yes for NiCads, not necessary for Lithium.
"4- Is it alright to use the battery in "high performance?"
Sure, but don't expect typical time-frame usage available under lower power usage circumstances. That's one of the reasons I have a portable DVD player for watching movies in flight. The player isn't trying to do everything the laptop is trying to do in the background while I just want to watch a movie.
"5- Is there another alternative?"
There are portable power supplies specifically made for low voltage needs like laptops, portable DVD players, cell phone chargers, etc., but I can't see you being that far from a power source long enough to consider buying one.
