This once elite social organization that was located in Portland. In 1919, a group of aircraft pilots organized the Aero Club, at the time exclusively for flyers. It was located in the old Calumet Hotel Building downtown. In 1926, it expanded and was opened to non-pilots. In 1937, it moved to its final location at 804 S.W. Taylor St. where it flourished for nearly 50 years. In 1984, declining membership forced it to close it's doors. The building still stands, but has gone through several owners in the last 10 years and now is scheduled to be demolished to be replaced by a new building, probably next year.
The club had a well known restaurant for members and featured athletic facilities as well as games. Because of Oregons social gaming laws, it was one of the clubs that were, at least until recently, allowed to operate in the Portland area. I have found two denominations of chips that were used there, so this was not just a place to play poker for fun.
