In Response To: A Personal Observation ()

I have just read your post and have a few thoughts (big surprises grin). I think you make several distinct points

1. That ebay sellers use the fact the price guides are a few years old, you suggest that they do so to cause bids increase.

2. That in your experience, ebay sales etc bring in lower than published values.

3. That you don't think that prices-generally-should be increased in any new edition that may come out (there are exceptions both ways). Furthermore you doubt a need for a new edition.

4. The major sale in the last couple of years in an anomoly (sp? I'm too lazy to check spelling).

I am not a big fan of ebay itself, and I find some sellers to be dubious in various ways. To be fair, there are sellers who areabove board, fair, and honest. I also suspect that sellers would make the same observations about buyers. While I have never noticed the reference to the guides in the form which you describe, technically it would be accurate and it is harm to blame a seller for the effort as long as they don't cross the line (I don't claim to be the arbiter of where that line is).

I have found that sale prices on ebay are frequently below 'book', but occasionally the sale price far exceeds 'book'. The editors make a coninuous effort to portray their guides as references not absolute rules. I also wonder if occasionally the high cost of shipping put forth in somesales is partly responsible for the decrease in bids-$5 plus $1 for shipping is the same as $3 and $3 for shipping in the end.

As for the liklihood of general increases in values in the guides, I doubt I am shocking anyone when I suggest that 'dealers' hope for increases and 'collecters' are less inclined toward increases. I believe that the editors try to make there determinations inas nuetral a manner as possible, but it certinly is a legitimate consideration for a person deciding what they want to offer (or accept) for a chip to weigh the potential biases of the editors and the assorted sources they rely upon. Both books provide the backgrounds of the editors and a list of those who assisted them, so the info is therew for whomever wishes to use it.

I like the fact that new editions are supposed to be coming. There are new chips, there is new info, some values have increased, some may have decreased, but a new edition puts the latest info in the hands of the various dealers, and collectors.

I was very appreciative of being given a copy of the disk that contained the platinum collection. I believe most were purchased by one buyer, but that is neither here nor there. If the parties are satisfied, then good for them. If and when the chips trickle into the community (and they may-probably-have) the value may be lower, and if they are, then the guides will probably take that into consideration. The collection and its sale is unique, so I doubt that values in the price guides will be (generally speaking) based upon that sale.

I did notice that someone responded with an unnecessary derogatory post, that is unfortunate. I saw your post as an expression in a reasonable tone, your thoughts on a relevant issue within the hobby. Inane comments make us all look foolish.
