Don, I tend to agree with your...

basic suggestion that the labor to make this chip is probably on par with making a split insert chip. I am comfortable with thinking that the holes were were drilled pre-pressing and filled with white clay-composition material, the same as filling in a notch that becomes an insert.

Note that the H/C mold is pressed into the "peg inserts" (for lack of a better term) and that each one is very aligned within the creme colored inserts. I would have used a color with more contrast and if this was a prototype, then I would have used a better inlay. The one depicted is printed off-center and applied off-center.

But hey, I wouldn't refuse it a place in my collection!
