Von, it was not my intent to come down hard on your comments - you are correct that the post office would be the central point for information about this type of fraud. But like Barry said, the more complaints, the better. No police chief wants to read the news story about a major fraud case that was ongoing and his or her department chose not to follow up on citizen complaints about it.

Yes, Mike, some police departments won't do much. Misdemeanors can be tricky because the police can't serve as complainants if they do not actually witness the offense. Therefore, they rely on the public to step forward and sign a complaint. When you add geography to the mix, it's difficult. Nonetheless, the fact that some police departments don't or can't do much does not mean these reports should never be filed in any jurisdiction. Again, people who commit widespread fraud for small amounts are counting on victims to give up. It is frustrating to me when I hear that victims will not take advantage of the resources that are out there to help them. It breeds distruct of law enforcement and in rare instances encourages people to take matters into their own hands.
