Strong labor area notwithstanding, Massachusetts has had Republican governors from 1991 to 2007. Surprisingly, since 1914, Massachusetts has had 14 Republican governors and 12 Democratic governors. So, while Massachusetts has a large Democratic population, it does have its Republicans.
