They were called WOPS in the early-20th Century ..
In Response To: THOUGHT FOR THE DAY ... ()

... and most were of Italian descent.

While being processed, signs were placed on their chest reading "WOP" which stood for "with out papers" or "with out passport" but nobody seemed to care if they were undocumented, as they were still processed. Maybe because most of those who already lived here (those arriving in the late-1880s) and those who made the recent crossing were kind of "all in the same boat" back then; searching for a better life for their family.

How quickly some forget....

.... The "WOP" signs placed around the neck are well-documented; pictures and drawings exist.
