I've had one for years - it makes it a lot easier to cross even when the rules don't require it.

I was on the university newspaper when I was in school. The paper got an offer to send a writer to Europe to interview Led Zeppelin or someone like that - and only one writer had a passport. He got the assignment (and the rest of us went out and got passports!)
