I once read a famous quote something like "Religion was invented so the poor don't kill the rich". Religion is clearly necessary in order to get so many people to have focus, that is, the people that need help to have focus. Imagine just letting people loose with no religion and no laws. It would be chaos real quick. Religion is what stops you, or should but doesn't most of the time, from stealing that wallet in that empty parking lot when no one would know. The idea is God is watching at all times. That should be enough to scare most people from stealing that wallet. I guess personal morals and values isn't enough motivation for some people. They need something real motivating like Heaven / Hell. I am smart enough to realize that is for illustrative purposes only, not reality. In other words, the threat of hell and the promise of heaven is suppossed to be enough to guide people down a path of a "good life".
I stopped believing in all that traditional religion stuff around the same time I stopped believeing in the tooth fairy and santa, for the same reasons. They are just as believable and just as factual.
The collection plate was passed around one too many times for my liking and I decided I just can't afford to be "religious" just yet.
It's ok, as long as I live my life in a less hypocrytical, less back-stabbing, less selfish way than so many "religous" people around me, then I know I have lived a good life. Why are so many "religious" people in jail? Why do so many "religious" people get divorced? Why do so many "religous" people say it's a dog eat dog world? It is not, that is just a copout after doing wrong to your "neighbor" and not being able to handle the guilt.
Dammit all, I ran out of popcorn!
