I think that it is probably that London is a City, and so Colchester takes the title of oldest recorded Town. There was some debate when Colchester looked at obtaining City status a few years ago - in England, you can't just call yourself a City, it is a title granted by the Government, with the presence of a cathedral usually (although not always) one of the reasons (Colchester doesn't have one!).
