My view is that Ahmadinejad doesn't have a right to free speech in this country outside of the walls of the UN Building. However, I know that our society tends to err more times on the side of granting freedoms to people who aren't guaranteed them by our Constitution, than the opposite.
Amadinejad knows this and is taking advantage of it. His visit here is typical of some of the political stunts he's pulled in the past, and he will probably achieve exactly what he set out to do, which is getting the world talking about him and about Iran.
In this situation, he wins no matter what happens.
If he is given a podium at Columbia, he has a wider audience to hear more of his propaganda. And, to those countries that he has spoken ill of in the past, it appears that a large portion of our American population supports him.
If the podium is denied, Al Jazeera will broadcast images of those who protest his speaking as their way of characterizing us as evil and anti-Islamic. In fact, I'm quite sure that will be the characterization put forth from Al Jazeera whether he speaks at Columbia or not.
To me, allowing Amadinejad to speak at Columbia would be akin to allowing Adolph Hitler to speak there during the years leading up to America's entry into World War II. I think decades from now, historians will be scratching their heads at how we could have been so blind.
Now, on to really important stuff... Doesn't anybody want one of these cool, notched Casino Sandia samples for $6 delivered??
