Just my opinion but the H&C's alone do not

provide a variation.
I discussed this in the past with Jim Blanchard when we were tracing the use of the CJ mold(s).
Shiny H&C's occur when the die cups are polished before use. After a quantity of chips have been made they will start to dull. Im going to guess this is a quite a large number, but here is a scenario and a little more info:
Paul-Son can run up to 32 'presses' at a time, and I believe each contains 4 pairs of cups. Therefore, at least 128 pairs of cups exist.
Firstly, no guarantee they will always remember/bother to polish the cups although I accept the vast majority of H&C's nowadays come out of the factory pretty shiny.
Second, those 128+ pairs of cups did not all come from one master die. They have a number of master dies and these vary slightly. This can lead to varieties such as those weve seen not too long ago with say h&c one side, reversed h&c the other side, merely from the operator installing 2 cups from different dies, rather than a pair, in error.

Now, just for info, the conclusion Jim and I reached on the CJ molds was this.
While they were at Burt Co they were always polished and all CJ orders, and PS orders for CJ come with shiny hat&canes.
After PS started their own manufacture and the mold(s) were returned to them by Burt Co, they continued to use them but didnt bother polishing.
PS also had their own long h&c mold which was similar but not identical. Thats why we occasionally see chips with the CJ h&c but no shiny hats.
