I checked out mine (SU condition) -- pretty much what you described.

One side with pronounced crosshatching, the other less so with a smoother surface (not completely smooth, though). I do see a small place in the center of chip where there could be something under, like a weight. Could only see that when tilting in light -- invisible to touch.
