I am afraid to open any post that is titled "why is this so hard?" , and also has a picture attachment to go with it .I figured the picture was of whatever was having the "hardness issues".....
Glad to see it is just scanner issues. Mine does the same thing, which sucks because a TON of what I collect is very brightly colored, and all look bad in my scans.
