I'm not sure what Greektown will do, but Motor City will not be switching chips so far. That is because they are expanding onto their existing site, and have already opened part of the expanded facility. They did not replace chips, and did not have any special chips to commemorate the first expansion. Perhaps when the expansion is complete they might have commemorative chips, but I don't know either way.

I don't know exactly what the law is, but apparently MGM - by moving to a different site - is required to count its assets at the old site and report to the gaming commission before it opens the new site. According to press reports, MGM will close for 36 hours to make the transition, even though gaming experts say it only needs to close for about 2 hours to count its money. The machines and tables will not be making the move - the new facility has new machines. Thus, gaming experts are at a bit of a loss to explain why MGM will voluntarily close down for more than a day and give up revenue during that time.
