This epistle was sent to the “Letters” section of the KC Star yesterday. I’m giving it between 4 and 7% chance of being printed, however. Anyhow, I thought you might want to know what I think even if the Star does not.

The following quotes in the KC Star, 8/21/07, are attributed to Bryan K. Walker as to why he might have decided to shoot at a bunch of police officers: “I might as well shoot it out because I was going to face at least 15 (years) or better anyway.” and ... “He did something and by the time he got ready to turn around, that’s when I let him have it”, and ... my personal favorite:” I let the clip go into him”.

By the time his court appointed and taxpayer provided lawyer maintains that poor Mr. Walker was beaten and coerced into a confession it might all go away. Somewhere along the line the Lewis Duiguids of the world will proclaim that he was disenfranchised and that a disproportionate number of underprivileged black youth end up in prison. Right behind that, the Barbara Shellys of the world will proclaim that he didn’t have enough toys when he was little and that he came from a broken home. His mama will say that he was turning his life around and was looking for a job and trying to do better. His baby’s mama will say that he was simply scared of the police! And on and on!

When Mr. Walker shows up in court in a taxpayer provided suit, he will sit quietly and let his lawyer do his talking for him. The aforementioned relatives will plead for forgiveness as he has seen God and is turning himself around. The neighborhood activists (whatever they are) will not show up on the 10 o’clock news as they certainly cannot appear as outraged for the police victims as they usually are for the neighborhood victims. “Where is the outrage?” will not be heard.

Eventually, there will be an opportunity for Mr. Walker to speak in open court if he chooses. My guess is that he won’t jump up and say: ” that’s when I let him have it”. Certainly my hope is that, after a fair trial, he will be led away in chains trying to count on his fingers just how many days there are in 50 years. Oh, yeah, I forgot one [quotation]: “Because I know I’m going back (to prison) and I’m going with a bang.”
