Another "How did they make that" illustration

This is a steel die that Mel and Armin had made to produce the bimetal-core chips for the Trocadero chip-show in Reno a number of years ago. The custom die was bolted into the tooling that formed the design for the metal portion of the chip. Notice again that the background pebbled appearance was formed by the background of the die. It's not clear to me whether the core was diecast with the design in it or if that was struck into the blank core later in the process. The chip in this scan is a marbelized-white, but several colors and denominations were made for the show.

I attended this show, and Armin mentioned they hoped to get an antique faro-table set up in the lobby, outside the Trocadero and actually show how the game was played. The chips for the game were made, but Gaming never gave approval to run the game. The Trocadero was a club inside the El Cortez Hotel in Reno in the 1940's. Actual chips are known from the Trocadero from this period. The show was held inside the same room that still had some of the trappings from the club of 50 years ago. I believe you can still see it just past the big bar to the right of the lobby at the El Cortez.
