I wish I had the resources to publish all the publications I am now going to refer to for you. For anyone that seriously doubts me, I will endeavour to scan the relevant pages.
I have 3 'blue books', all containing differing information.
In addition, I believe I have every Borland newsletter and Price list he ever sent out. Starting in 1982, there are around 40 of them.
Every one is dated.
Borland started producing his computerised listings in 1985. The same listings that are to be found in the "Blue Book". His concept for the Blue Book was as follows. The book itself was merely a ring binder to allow the collector to store the price lists and newsletters, together with introductory pages on molds etc. Anyone who has a copy will understand what I mean. The binder itself, copyrighted in 1988, and the lists that it contained, marked the start of a standardisation of catalog numbers developed by Borland.
The 3 copies I have, were, according to the enclosed introductory letters, 'issued' to customers in 1988, 1990 & 1991.
The introductions come with "Registered Blue Book Owners Newsletter #1", #2 and #3 respectively. As I have elsewhere a Newsletter #4 Im going to presume there was a later version also.
The price list in my 1991 book is marked "FIRST EDITION".
The price lists in the other two books actually consist of a price list followed by lots of single page updates. I guess this was a reason for the loose leaf format.
Im going to make a reasonable assumption here - "FIRST EDITION" referred to the first time he had compiled all his previous price lists into one, and when a customer 'signed up', the binder he was given would contain the most recent listing (after all it was his retail price list)
For the record, my books are serial #1 (1988), no serial (1990) and serial #151 (1991)
I have checked through every one of Borland's price lists from 1985. The first occurrence of a Silver Star chip was in the 1988 listing that comes at the front of my first Blue Book. It lists a $1 Paulson in white.
There is no mention of any other Silver Star chips in the updates from 1998 to 1990.
The 1990 book shows the same single chip only. Again, no mention in any updates.
The 1991 book shows 4 chips - the same $1 Paulson and its matching $5, plus two listings for a $1 NEVADA mold, one white and one grey, both with 3 orange inserts. This is the first reference I can find to any SS NEVADA mold chips.
No further additional Silver Star chips appear in his final newsletters.
The question I now have is - Has anyone ever seen a Silver Star Nevada Club chip that is not uncirculated?
